Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Food Policy Council

Who We Are

History

Since August of 2007, representatives from over 35 local organizations and business have attended and contributed to the development of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Food Policy Coalition (FPC) concept, work plan, and agenda. These individuals represent of a wide variety of interests and stakeholders, including: hunger advocacy, environmental protection, public health, urban/rural farmers, economic development, community organizing, sustainability, academia, local governments, and more. This cross section of individuals has brought knowledge and experience that is essential to the development of a comprehensive approach to improving our local food system.

Initially organized through Steps to a Healthier Cleveland, a program of the Cleveland Department of Public Health, the development of a local Food Policy Coalition has been received with great enthusiasm and support. Moreover, Steps to a Healthier Cleveland has awarded grant dollars to Case Western Reserve and the Ohio State University Extension to assist in the staffing and resource development for the Council. A major accomplishment that depended greatly on the initial enthusiasm and support from local agencies, business, and individuals.

Today

The FPC includes a mix of businesses, governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, farmers, and consumers. The coalition was established to coordinate public-private partnerships aimed at improving food access in urban neighborhoods and stimulating the overall local food system in Northeast Ohio. The policy council seeks also to blend the perspectives of grassroots communities and policy makers and organizational leaders.
