Fruit and Vegetable Consumption Among Urban Gardeners in Cleveland

This presentation shares the results of a survey conducted by Dr. Punam Ohri-Vachaspati and Marisa Warrix of Ohio State Universoty Extension, Cuyahoga County in 1999-2000 of community gardeners in Cleveland. Their research idenitifes the socio-economic background of Cleveland's community gardeners, fruit and vegetable consumption patterns among these residents, and common methods used for preparing fresh produce.

2012 Produce Perks transit posters

Over the course of Summer and Fall of 2012, FPC contracted 40 RTA buses on Cleveland east and west side routes to display posters directing customers to the nearest Produce Perks farmers' markets.

The Produce Perks Market Report provides a full scope of the program from May 2012 (2012 program launch) to January 2013 (near the closing of the program in April 2013). Food Retail Inventory Tool

The Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods at Case Western Reserve University has developed an assesment tool for food retailers that identifies the availability of healthy options within the store including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole wheat bread, dried beans, and high fiber or low sugar cereals. The tool also notes if alcohol and tobacco products are sold, if prepared foods are available, and the ratio of food to nonfood aisles in the store.

Defining and Analyzing a Food Desert by CSU Student Monique Russell

Cleveland State University student, Monique Russell, and Dr. Brian Mikelbank of CSU's Levin College of Urban Affairs recently completed a revised anaylsis of food access in Cuyahoga County that includes food pantries, urban gardens, and farmers markets and a measure of access using network analysis instead of straight line distance.

“Urban Agriculture, Composting and Zoning: A zoning code model for promoting composting and organic waste diversion through sustainable urban agriculture” is a report and guidance document issued by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to assist municipalities, zoning and planning departments, departments of health and community garden associations in developing polciies that can support composting and gardening in local communities.
