FPC Working with Bush Consulting on the Sustainable Food Business Cluster Project

FPC in partnership with the City of Cleveland’s Office of Sustainability will be working with Bush Consulting of Salem, Ohio to complete an analysis and roadmap of the food business cluster in Northeast Ohio with a focus on Cleveland and Cuyahoga County.  Brookings Institution defines clusters as "geographic concentrations of interconnected businesses, suppliers, service providers, and associated institutions in a particular sector." Food Retail Inventory Tool

The Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods at Case Western Reserve University has developed an assesment tool for food retailers that identifies the availability of healthy options within the store including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole wheat bread, dried beans, and high fiber or low sugar cereals.  The tool also notes if alcohol and tobacco products are sold, if prepared foods are available, and the ratio of food to nonfood aisles in the store.

Defining and Analyzing a Food Desert by CSU Student Monique Russell

Cleveland State University student, Monique Russell, and Dr. Brian Mikelbank of CSU's Levin College of Urban Affairs recently completed a revised anaylsis of food access in Cuyahoga County that includes food pantries, urban gardens, and farmers markets and a measure of access using network analysis instead of straight line distance.

UNC Chapel Hill features CCCFPC within their research center!

In the early part of this year, staff from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill's Center for Training and Research Translation visited the CCCFPC to gain insight into our organization and our implementation strategies. Cuyahoga County Assessment: Access to Supermarkets

Cuyahoga County Assessment: Access to Supermarkets is a summary of findings released by the County Planning Commission in December 2011 that shares the methodology and results from a recent food retail assessment in Cuyahoga County.  Using several data sources including local fieldwork and store assessments, the report shares information on low access areas within Cuyahoga County where access to fresh, healthy food needed to maintain a healthy diet may be limited.

Retail Food Gaps and Opportunities in Cuyahoga County

Cuyahoga County Planning Commission, Cuyahoga County Board of Health, OSU Extension, and the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Food Policy Coalition worked in partnership to develop an updated assessment of the food retail environment in Cuyahoga County.  Building off of the food retail assessment led by County Planning Commission in 2008, this presentation released in December 2011 contains several maps that demonstrate potential relationships between poverty and income, transportation access and car ownership, and food retail locations.... Read more »
